DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 358 OF 365

Prayer Before the Throne

Read Revelation 8

Before the trumpets sound, Revelation 8 draws attention to the prayers of God’s people. Heaven falls silent, and an angel presents incense with the prayers of all the saints before God. Then the censer that carried incense is filled with altar fire and thrown to the earth, followed by terrifying signs. This sequence places prayer within the unfolding of God’s judgment, not outside the concerns of his throne. For John’s readers, the image shows that their prayers are received before God, even while events on earth appear overwhelming. Yet the passage does not make prayer a means of controlling disasters or directing punishment toward personal enemies. God governs what follows. We are invited to pray with reverence: the One who receives his people’s petitions is also the holy Judge whose actions shake creation.

Put the Word into practice

Bring one situation of injustice before God today, asking him to judge rightly and care for those affected, while surrendering your preferred timing and outcome to him.

How does the movement from incense and prayer to altar fire and judgment reshape the way you bring injustice before God?

A prayerful response

Holy God, thank you that the prayers of your people come before you. Teach me to bring suffering and injustice to your throne with honesty and reverence. Keep resentment from shaping my requests, and help me trust your righteous judgment.
