DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 354 OF 365
Crowns Laid Before the Creator
Read Revelation 4The elders wear crowns and occupy thrones, yet their place of honor does not make them the center of heaven. When the living creatures offer glory, honor, and thanks, the elders fall before God and lay their crowns before his throne. Their movement interprets their dignity: whatever honor they possess belongs beneath the greater worth of the Creator. They do not praise God because he has served their ambitions, but because everything exists through his will. For the assemblies receiving John’s vision, this scene locates ultimate authority beyond every earthly claim to greatness. It also gives worship a clear direction. Worship is more than being impressed by heavenly beauty; it is the willing surrender of our claims to independent importance. We can receive responsibility and recognition gratefully while refusing to treat either as something that makes us self-sufficient.
Put the Word into practice
Choose one responsibility or achievement you are tempted to treat as proof of your importance. Name it before God in prayer and deliberately place its use under his authority.

How does the elders’ act of laying down their crowns challenge the way you handle recognition or authority?
A prayerful response
Creator God, all I possess depends on you. Free me from using responsibility or recognition to exalt myself. Teach me to honor you gladly with the very things that could feed my pride.
