DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 353 OF 365
When Self-Sufficiency Locks the Door
Read Revelation 3Laodicea’s deepest problem is not that the assembly possesses wealth, but that prosperity has convinced it that nothing is missing. Jesus exposes the distance between its confident self-assessment and its actual spiritual condition. The images of poverty, blindness, and nakedness overturn its claims of sufficiency. Yet his rebuke is not the withdrawal of love. He explicitly connects correction with love and calls the assembly to earnest repentance. His counsel directs these believers back to himself for what their resources cannot supply. The picture of Jesus knocking therefore addresses a church that needs restored fellowship, not merely people who have never professed faith. For this original assembly, opening the door meant responding to his correction rather than defending its reputation. For us, the searching question is whether comfort has made us resistant to the Lord whose fellowship we claim to desire.
Put the Word into practice
Identify one area where comfort or financial security has made you dismiss Jesus’ correction. Confess that self-sufficiency and take one specific action today that obeys what you have been resisting.
Search the Scripture
Where does your assessment of your spiritual condition resemble Laodicea’s confidence more than Jesus’ searching diagnosis?
A prayerful response
Jesus, expose the needs I have hidden beneath comfort and confidence. Help me receive your correction as love, repent sincerely, and welcome your fellowship rather than protect my self-image.
