DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 352 OF 365

Faithfulness Must Still Love

Read Revelation 2

Jesus’ message to Ephesus refuses a shallow assessment of spiritual health. He recognizes the assembly’s hard work, endurance, and careful testing of people who falsely claim apostolic authority. Those qualities matter; Jesus does not ask the church to abandon discernment. Yet its genuine strengths do not cancel its serious failure: it has left its first love. The command that follows is concrete. The believers must remember, repent, and return to the works that expressed that love. Jesus is not asking them merely to recover a feeling or to congratulate themselves on earlier devotion. Their changed direction must become visible in what they do. The threatened removal of their lamp stand shows that this is no minor deficiency in an otherwise successful church. For us, doctrinal care and tireless service cannot substitute for love. Listening to the Spirit includes receiving Christ’s correction precisely where our achievements might make us defensive.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one loving action you once practiced but have neglected—such as attentive prayer or practical care for another believer—and deliberately resume it today as an act of repentance.

Search the Scripture

If Jesus commended your endurance and discernment, what neglected work of love might he still call you to restore?

A prayerful response

Jesus, thank you for seeing both faithful labor and what is missing beneath it. Forgive me for treating discernment or activity as a substitute for love. Help me remember honestly, repent willingly, and express renewed love through my actions. Amen.
