DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 350 OF 365

Strengthened for Merciful Rescue

Read Jude 1

Jude turns from exposing destructive teachers to describing how his beloved readers should live among the danger. They are to build themselves up in their holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, remain in God’s love, and await Jesus’ mercy. These commands describe active dependence, not anxious self-preservation. Their stability is meant to make compassionate action possible: some people need discerning mercy, while others require urgent rescue from destructive sin. Jude does not ask the church to choose between holiness and compassion. They must reject the corruption while caring about the person caught in it. Praying in the Spirit belongs within this whole pattern of faithful, merciful living; the passage does not specify a single form that prayer must take. Finally, Jude directs their confidence toward God’s ability to keep them from stumbling. Their responsibility is real, but their hope rests in their Savior’s power.

Put the Word into practice

Pray in dependence on the Holy Spirit for someone being drawn toward destructive teaching, then contact that person with a compassionate invitation to discuss the faith rather than a contemptuous accusation.

How do Jude’s commands in verses 20–23 challenge you to pursue both spiritual stability and compassionate involvement with others?

A prayerful response

God our Savior, strengthen me in the faith and teach me to pray by your Spirit. Keep my heart tender toward people in danger and firm against the sin that harms them. Give me wisdom to offer mercy and courage to help. Amen.
