DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 347 OF 365
Life Located in the Son
Read 1 John 5The assurance John offers rests on God’s testimony concerning his Son. In verses 9–13, he moves from the reliability of God’s witness to the content of that witness: God has given eternal life, and that life is in Jesus. His readers are believers, and he writes so that they may know they have this life and continue believing. Assurance is therefore not presented as confidence in an impressive spiritual record or an unusually strong feeling. Its foundation is the Son whom God has given. John’s distinction is direct: possessing life cannot be separated from having the Son. That clarity both comforts and directs us. When confidence wavers, we are invited to attend again to God’s testimony rather than endlessly measure our emotional certainty. The response John seeks is continuing faith in Jesus, the One in whom eternal life is found.
Put the Word into practice
Write a brief response to verses 11–13 that names where God says eternal life is found, then use it in prayer when you are tempted to base assurance only on your feelings.
Search the Scripture
How do verses 11–13 identify both the foundation of eternal life and John’s purpose in writing to believers?
A prayerful response
Father, thank you for giving eternal life in your Son. Teach me to receive your testimony as trustworthy. When my confidence wavers, turn my attention toward Jesus and strengthen me to continue believing in him. Amen.
