DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 346 OF 365

Discernment That Honors Jesus

Read 1 John 4

Spiritual claims require testing, not automatic acceptance. John tells his beloved readers this because false prophets are already active, making discernment a practical responsibility rather than a theoretical concern. His test centers on Jesus Christ: a spirit from God confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Spiritual language, confidence, or popularity cannot substitute for that confession. John also distinguishes those who receive his testimony from those who reject it. His readers therefore have a truth by which to evaluate voices claiming divine authority. This does not require dismissing the Spirit’s present work or genuine prophecy. It requires welcoming what comes from God while refusing what contradicts the truth about his Son. The reassurance in verse 4 matters here: discernment need not be driven by panic, because the One dwelling in God’s people is greater than the deceiving power confronting them.

Put the Word into practice

Before receiving a prophetic message or spiritual teaching as authoritative, examine what it affirms about Jesus Christ and compare it with the testimony in verses 1–6.

What tests does John give in verses 1–6, and how do they challenge judging a message mainly by its popularity or spiritual intensity?

A prayerful response

Father, make me receptive to your Spirit and discerning about spiritual claims. Keep me faithful to the truth of Jesus Christ come in the flesh. Replace both gullibility and fear with confidence in your presence and careful obedience. Amen.
