DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 345 OF 365

When Compassion Opens Its Hands

Read 1 John 3

John brings the immense claim of Christ’s self-giving love into an ordinary encounter: a believer has material resources and sees another believer in need. The question is not whether the observer can describe love beautifully, but whether compassion remains open or is deliberately shut. Jesus laid down his life for us; therefore, love among his people must become more than speech. John’s readers are being called to recognize that practical generosity belongs to their identity as people who have passed from death into life. Meeting a need does not purchase that life. It makes visible the love that characterizes it. The movement from Christ’s sacrifice to our available resources also keeps the command concrete. We may imagine love only in dramatic terms while overlooking the need already before us. John asks whether our possessions are available to serve a brother or sister.

Put the Word into practice

Identify a material need among believers you know and use something you already have—money, food, clothing, or another useful resource—to help meet it today.

In verses 16–18, what connection does John make between Jesus laying down his life and your response to a believer’s material need?

A prayerful response

Jesus, your self-giving love exposes how easily I settle for caring words. Open my compassion toward the needs I can actually see. Help me use what I possess to love your people in deed and truth. Amen.
