DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 344 OF 365

Remain in What You Received

Read 1 John 2

John addresses believers facing people who would lead them away from the truth about Jesus. His response is not to send them searching for a more impressive spiritual message. He urges them to let the message they received from the beginning remain in them. The central issue is the Son: denying Jesus as the Christ cannot preserve fellowship with the Father. Alongside this warning, John reminds his readers that they have received an anointing from the Holy One. God has not left them helpless before deception. His assurance that this anointing teaches them is not a rejection of all instruction; John is himself instructing them through this letter. Rather, they need not depend on deceivers to supply a supposedly missing truth. For believers today, spiritual confidence belongs with steadfast allegiance to Jesus, not fascination with teachings that displace him.

Put the Word into practice

Examine one spiritual message you have recently heard or read. Compare its claims about Jesus with verses 22–25, and reject any claim that separates knowing the Father from confessing the Son.

Search the Scripture

How do verses 22–27 connect the anointing believers have received with remaining in the message about Jesus?

A prayerful response

Holy God, thank you that you have not left your people defenseless against deception. Keep the truth about your Son firmly rooted in me. Let your anointing strengthen my discernment and my willingness to remain in Jesus. Amen.
