DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 340 OF 365

Diligence Rooted in God’s Provision

Read 2 Peter 1

The movement from divine provision to human diligence shapes 2 Peter 1:3–9. Peter first reminds his readers that God’s power has supplied what they need for life and godliness through knowing him. Only then does he urge them to cultivate moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, affection, and love. Their effort answers God’s generosity; it does not replace it. Nor does knowing Jesus make character growth unnecessary. Peter describes these qualities as the difference between fruitful knowledge and a life that has become spiritually shortsighted. Neglecting them involves forgetting the cleansing already received. For us, growth therefore requires both dependence and deliberate practice. We remember God’s provision and cleansing, then bring diligence to the habits and relationships where his character should become visible. Love is not an optional addition to spiritual knowledge; it belongs to its intended fruit.

Put the Word into practice

Select one quality from Peter’s list that is weak in a current relationship, and practice it deliberately today—for example, exercise self-control by listening fully before answering a difficult comment.

A prayerful response

God, you have not left me without provision for a godly life. Keep me mindful of your cleansing and generous power. Stir me out of passivity, and help me cultivate character that makes my knowledge of Jesus fruitful in love. Amen.
