DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 337 OF 365

A Ready Answer with a Gentle Spirit

Read 1 Peter 3

Peter connects readiness to explain Christian hope with the way believers respond to hostility. His readers are not told to become sharper at returning insults. They are called to bless, pursue peace, and keep a good conscience even when doing right brings suffering. Within that setting, readiness to answer is more than having persuasive words available. It grows from honoring the Lord in the heart and maintaining conduct consistent with hope. Humility and reverence belong to the explanation itself; they are not optional manners added after the truth has been spoken. Peter does not promise that goodness will prevent every injury, since he explicitly allows for suffering for righteousness. He points instead to Christ, whose undeserved suffering brought the unrighteous to God. Our defense of hope should therefore reflect the Savior we confess, refusing to make another person’s hostility the pattern for our own speech.

Put the Word into practice

Prepare a brief explanation of how Jesus’s suffering, resurrection, and authority give you hope. Practice saying it calmly, without attacking someone who might disagree.

According to verses 14–18, what must accompany a ready explanation of hope if your words are to match your life in Christ?

A prayerful response

Lord, give me courage to explain my hope and humility in the way I speak. Keep resentment from shaping my answers. When I face hostility, help me pursue peace, maintain a clear conscience, and point faithfully to Jesus.
