Praise That Opens Its Hands

Read Hebrews 13

In Hebrews 13:15–16, worship moves from the lips into the practical life of the community. The writer urges believers to offer continual praise through Jesus, then immediately joins that instruction to doing good and sharing. These are not competing forms of devotion. Both belong to the sacrifices that please God. The surrounding passage explains why: Jesus suffered outside the gate to sanctify his people, and his followers are called to bear his reproach rather than make acceptance in their present surroundings their highest aim. Their lasting home is still ahead. For these readers, allegiance to Jesus therefore involved both public confession and generous action. Today, praise remains incomplete as an expression of obedience when we deliberately withhold help we could give. The mouth that honors Jesus should belong to a life increasingly available to others.

Put the Word into practice

Offer God a specific prayer of praise for Jesus, then share something useful today—such as a meal, transportation, or needed supplies—with someone whose need you already know.

Why does the writer place doing good and sharing immediately after the command to offer continual praise?

A prayerful response

God, receive my praise through Jesus. Keep my worship from becoming words detached from love. Loosen my grip on what I possess, and make me willing to honor you through practical generosity, even when following Jesus costs me approval. Amen.
