Run with Your Eyes on Jesus

Read Hebrews 12

Hebrews 12 gives weary believers a clear direction for endurance: look to Jesus while laying aside whatever obstructs faithful obedience. The race requires more than resisting obvious sin. The writer distinguishes entangling sin from other weights, inviting readers to recognize burdens that hinder them even when those burdens are not themselves identified as sinful. Yet the central instruction is not relentless self-examination; it is sustained attention to Jesus. He endured the cross and its shame with the joy before him in view, and he now sits beside God’s throne. His endurance gives these struggling readers reason not to surrender inwardly. For believers today, perseverance is neither pretending that opposition is painless nor relying on determination alone. It means considering Jesus deeply enough that his faithfulness shapes our next act of obedience.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one recurring distraction that interferes with obedience to Jesus. Set it aside for a defined period today, and use that time to reflect on Hebrews 12:1–3 before returning to the responsibility you have been avoiding.

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, turn my attention toward your endurance when I become weary. Expose the sin that entangles me and the burdens I need to release. Strengthen me to continue in faithful obedience rather than retreat inwardly. Amen.
