DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 325 OF 365
A Cleansed Conscience for Living Service
Read Hebrews 9A cleansed conscience has a purpose in Hebrews 9: service to the living God. The chapter contrasts the former sanctuary’s repeated rituals with Christ’s decisive entrance through his own blood. Those earlier ordinances dealt with outward cleansing but could not bring the worshiper’s conscience to completion. Jesus offered himself without defect through the eternal Spirit, accomplishing what those gifts and sacrifices could not. The original hearers were therefore being pointed beyond the earthly sanctuary to the effective redemption secured by Christ. Notice where the argument leads: not simply to feeling better, but to being freed from dead works for living service. We do not repair our standing before God by adding religious activity to Christ’s sacrifice. Nor does cleansing leave us idle. His offering releases us to serve God from a conscience resting on his work rather than continually attempting to establish our own adequacy.
Put the Word into practice
Choose one act of service you have been using to prove your worth, and perform it today as a grateful response to Christ’s redemption instead.

How does the purpose stated in Hebrews 9:14 challenge either your attempts to earn acceptance or your reluctance to serve?
A prayerful response
Jesus, your offering reaches where outward activity cannot. Cleanse my conscience and free me from trying to make myself acceptable through religious effort. Teach me to serve the living God with gratitude, sincerity, and confidence in your completed work. Amen.
