DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 324 OF 365
Obedience Written Within
Read Hebrews 8The new covenant promise in Hebrews 8 reaches beneath outward behavior into the mind and heart. God does not merely place his commands before his people; he promises to establish them within his people. The chapter names Israel and Judah as the recipients of this promise and recalls their ancestors’ failure to continue in the earlier covenant. The answer to that failure is not a lower standard of faithfulness, but a better covenant mediated by Jesus. God joins inward obedience with belonging, knowledge of him, and mercy toward sin. These promises belong together: forgiveness is not permission to remain unchanged, and obedience is not a payment that purchases relationship. The original hearers were being directed toward the superior ministry of their heavenly high priest. Today, we should seek more than the appearance of devotion. God’s promised work concerns what we love, think, and willingly obey.
Put the Word into practice
Identify one area where your outward compliance hides inward resistance, and ask God to reshape that desire as you choose a specific act of obedience today.
Search the Scripture
Where does your response to God need to move from outward compliance toward the inward faithfulness described in Hebrews 8:10–12?
A prayerful response
God of mercy, thank you for the better covenant mediated by Jesus. Bring my thoughts and desires into agreement with your ways. Let my obedience grow from knowing you and belonging to you, rather than from a need to impress others. Amen.
