DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 323 OF 365

A Priest Death Cannot Interrupt

Read Hebrews 7

Death kept interrupting the ministry of Israel’s priests. However faithfully one served, another eventually had to take his place. Hebrews 7 directs its hearers to a radically different priesthood: Jesus lives forever, so his ministry never passes to a successor. His ability to save those who approach God through him rests on his enduring life, not on their ability to maintain perfect confidence. His continuing intercession also belongs alongside his completed sacrifice. He does not offer himself repeatedly; his once-for-all offering is sufficient, and he remains personally active on behalf of his people. For the original hearers, this established why Jesus offered a better hope than the former priestly arrangement. For us, it means approaching God is not an attempt to find a moment when he might receive us. We come through the holy, living Son who continually represents us.

Put the Word into practice

Bring one concern you have avoided discussing with God into prayer today, deliberately approaching him through Jesus rather than waiting to feel worthy.

According to Hebrews 7:23–27, how do Jesus’ enduring life and once-for-all offering change the basis on which you approach God?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, thank you that death cannot end your priesthood and my weakness does not exhaust your care. Help me rely on your sufficient offering and approach God honestly through you. Replace my hesitation with confidence in who you are. Amen.
