DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 322 OF 365

An Anchor Held by God’s Faithfulness

Read Hebrews 6

The anchor in Hebrews 6 is unusual: the hope it pictures reaches into God’s presence, where Jesus has already entered on behalf of his people. Its security does not depend on the readers’ ability to create reassuring feelings. The writer grounds their encouragement in God’s unchanging purpose and his inability to lie. God confirmed his promise to Abraham with an oath, giving the heirs of the promise strong reason to trust him. Jesus, named as their forerunner and enduring high priest, makes this hope personal rather than abstract. These believers are still called to diligence, faith, and perseverance; an anchored hope is not an invitation to sluggishness. But their endurance rests on someone more reliable than themselves. When waiting stretches long, the chapter directs attention toward God’s trustworthy character and Jesus’ presence before him for us.

Put the Word into practice

Write Hebrews 6:17–20 beside one situation in which waiting is weakening your hope, and pray through what those verses say about God’s character and Jesus’ priesthood.

Search the Scripture

In Hebrews 6:17–20, what makes hope secure, and how does that security support the diligence urged earlier in the chapter?

A prayerful response

Faithful God, steady my hope in your unchanging purpose rather than my shifting feelings. Thank you that Jesus has entered your presence for us. Strengthen me to keep trusting and serving while I wait.
