DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 319 OF 365

The Daily Work of Encouragement

Read Hebrews 3

A hardened heart does not always announce itself through open rebellion. Hebrews 3 describes sin as deceitful: it can make unbelief seem reasonable and disobedience seem harmless. The writer reminds these believers that the wilderness generation heard God and witnessed his deeds, yet still refused to trust him. Exposure to God’s works did not make their hearts immune to resistance. Against that danger, the chapter gives a distinctly communal command: believers are to exhort one another daily. This is more than friendly conversation. It is encouragement that helps another person keep trusting and obeying Christ. The readers are addressed as people sharing a heavenly calling, yet they still need watchfulness and mutual care. Holding firmly to Christ is not presented as an isolated achievement. God’s people help one another respond to his voice while the opportunity remains before them.

Put the Word into practice

Contact one fellow believer today and offer a specific encouragement to trust and obey Jesus in an area where that person is struggling.

According to Hebrews 3:12–13, how can daily encouragement interrupt the movement from sin’s deception toward unbelief?

A prayerful response

Father, expose the ways sin makes excuses sound convincing to me. Keep my heart responsive to you, and make me a faithful encourager who helps others hold firmly to Christ.
