DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 317 OF 365
The Son Reigns; Angels Serve
Read Hebrews 1Hebrews opens by placing the Son above every heavenly servant. The readers are not asked to admire Jesus as merely the greatest messenger. He is the one through whom God made the worlds, the perfect expression of God's being, and the one sustaining all things by his powerful word. After accomplishing purification for sins, he takes his place at God's right hand. The chapter then sharpens the contrast: angels worship and serve, while the Son possesses an enduring throne and rules in righteousness. Even the heavens can wear out, but he remains unchanged. This gives the readers a firm center for their trust. Their salvation rests with the reigning Son, not with created servants, however glorious those servants may be. Angelic ministry is real and beneficial, but its place is service under his supremacy. The chapter directs our worship and confidence to Jesus.
Put the Word into practice
Set aside five minutes to worship Jesus specifically for the actions Hebrews 1 attributes to him: creating, sustaining, purifying from sins, and reigning.

A prayerful response
Lord Jesus, you are worthy of my worship and trust. Thank you for purifying sins and for sustaining what you have made. Turn my attention from fascination with created things toward your enduring glory and righteous reign. Amen.
