DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 310 OF 365

Correction Aimed at Recovery

Read 2 Timothy 2

Being right does not give the Lord's servant permission to become quarrelsome. In 2 Timothy 2, Paul places careful teaching beside gentleness, patience, and the hope of an opponent's repentance. This is not indifference to error. Earlier in the chapter, he names teaching that damages faith and describes destructive speech with the disturbing image of spreading disease. Truth matters deeply, which is precisely why correction must seek something better than victory in an argument. Timothy is to teach in a way that serves the other person's recovery, recognizing that repentance depends on God's gracious work rather than verbal force. The command first addresses Timothy's responsibility as a teacher, but its pattern also searches our conversations. We can oppose falsehood without treating people as trophies to win or enemies to humiliate. Faithful correction combines clarity about truth with patient concern for the person caught in error.

Put the Word into practice

Before your next necessary correction, write down the specific error you need to address and one gentle question that could help the person reconsider it; use those instead of an accusation.

In verses 24–26, how does the hoped-for recovery of the person in error reshape the way you should correct them?

A prayerful response

Lord, make me truthful without becoming harsh. Give me patience with those who disagree, wisdom to avoid useless disputes, and genuine concern for their freedom. Work repentance in us, including wherever I need correction. Amen.
