DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 308 OF 365

When Wealth Stops Being Your Hope

Read 1 Timothy 6

Money becomes spiritually dangerous when it moves from being something we use to something we trust. In 1 Timothy 6, Paul exposes teachers who treat godliness as a way to become wealthy, then directs Timothy toward contentment instead. Our empty-handed arrival and departure reveal the limits of possessions: they cannot provide lasting security. Yet Paul does not tell wealthy believers that enjoying provision is wrong. He tells them to relocate their hope from uncertain resources to the living God, and to make generosity a defining practice. This is a searching contrast. Greed reaches for more and can pull people away from faith; contentment receives what God provides and becomes willing to share. For believers today, the issue is not merely the size of an account, but whether money is governing our confidence, ambitions, and treatment of others.

Put the Word into practice

Review one discretionary expense this week and redirect that amount toward a specific person's material need, deliberately practicing the generosity Paul commands.

According to Paul's instructions to wealthy believers in verses 17–19, what would change in your use of money if your hope rested more fully in God?

A prayerful response

Living God, expose the places where I trust possessions more than you. Teach me to receive your provision with gratitude and to share it freely. Form contentment in me so that my resources serve love rather than rule my heart. Amen.
