DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 301 OF 365

Love the Truth More Than the Spectacle

Read 2 Thessalonians 2

The Thessalonians were being unsettled by claims that the day of Christ had already arrived. Paul answers by exposing a crucial danger: spiritual impressiveness can serve deception. The lawless one's activity includes signs and wonders, but its character is opposition to God and its effect is to draw people away from truth. The problem is not merely that people lack information; Paul describes a refusal to love the truth and a pleasure in unrighteousness. He then contrasts this with salvation through the Spirit's sanctifying work and belief in the truth. For us, the passage does not require suspicion of every miracle. It does require refusing to make supernatural spectacle the measure of truth. Whatever questions remain about the sequence and identities described here, Paul's practical direction is clear: hold firmly to the apostolic teaching and become established in good words and works.

Why does Paul connect susceptibility to deception with refusing to love the truth and taking pleasure in unrighteousness?

A prayerful response

God our Father, deepen my love for truth beyond my attraction to impressive experiences. Holy Spirit, sanctify my desires and expose any pleasure I take in unrighteousness. Keep me steady in the teaching that directs me toward Jesus and faithful living. Amen.
