Goodness Strengthened by God's Power

Read 2 Thessalonians 1

After describing the future revelation of Jesus, Paul turns to prayer for the Thessalonians' present lives. These believers are enduring persecution, yet their faith and mutual love are growing. Paul does not conclude that they must simply try harder. He asks God to fulfill their desires for goodness and their works of faith with power. Their calling requires a lived response, but that response depends on divine grace rather than self-sufficiency. The purpose is equally important: Jesus is to be glorified in them. Their endurance and goodness are not a platform for personal admiration. For believers facing opposition today, this prayer provides a concrete direction. We can ask God to strengthen faithful action while entrusting final judgment to him. Waiting for Christ's righteous relief need not mean becoming passive; it can mean continuing to love and do good through his enabling power.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one good action you have hesitated to take because of opposition. Pray through verses 11–12, then carry it out with the aim of honoring Jesus rather than proving yourself.

How does Paul's prayer in verses 11–12 connect God's power, the believers' actions, and the glory of Jesus?

A prayerful response

Father, strengthen every faithful desire to do good. Where opposition has made us weary, supply power to keep loving and serving. Keep us from seeking our own praise, and let the name of Jesus be honored through our conduct. Amen.
