DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 297 OF 365

Strengthened by Another’s Steadfastness

Read 1 Thessalonians 3

Paul sends Timothy to strengthen the Thessalonians because he knows affliction can unsettle faith. He had already told them to expect suffering, but advance instruction did not make ongoing care unnecessary. Timothy’s visit becomes a means of comfort in both directions. The Thessalonians receive support, and Paul, himself distressed, is encouraged by the report of their faith and love. This exchange reveals a community in which strength is shared rather than possessed by only one leader. Their steadfastness brings Paul joy, yet he still prays to supply what is lacking in their faith. Genuine encouragement can celebrate growth while recognizing the need for more. For us, supporting a suffering believer means neither assuming everything is fine nor treating them only as a problem to solve. Their enduring faith may also become God’s means of strengthening us as we continue seeking their growth.

Put the Word into practice

Contact one believer facing hardship. Ask specifically how their faith is holding up, listen for evidence of faith and love, and offer a prayer shaped by what they share.

What does Timothy’s report reveal about how the Thessalonians strengthened Paul, even while they still needed strengthening themselves?

A prayerful response

Father, make me attentive to believers whose faith is under pressure. Help me offer comfort without easy answers and receive encouragement from their perseverance. Increase our love, strengthen what is lacking, and establish our hearts in holiness before you. Amen.
