DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 295 OF 365

Joy That Turns Toward God

Read 1 Thessalonians 1

The Thessalonians received the gospel amid affliction, yet their reception was marked by joy from the Holy Spirit. Paul does not treat suffering as evidence that God’s power was absent. In verses 5–10, the Spirit’s work accompanies the message and becomes visible in a transformed community. These believers turned from idols toward the living and true God, began serving him, and waited for his risen Son. Their faith then became known beyond their own city. This chapter welcomes confidence in the Spirit’s active power without specifying every form that power took. Its emphasis falls on the gospel received with assurance, joy amid hardship, and a decisive change of allegiance. For believers today, spiritual vitality cannot be measured only by favorable circumstances. The Spirit enables a life that turns toward God, serves him faithfully, and holds hope in Jesus, the deliverer from coming wrath.

Name one rival loyalty that competes with your service to God. Set aside a specific practice that feeds it today, and use that time or resource to serve God through an act of love.

What evidence in verses 6–10 shows that the Thessalonians’ response to the gospel was more than an emotional experience?

A prayerful response

Living and true God, turn my heart away from every rival to you. Holy Spirit, deepen my assurance in the gospel and sustain your joy within hardship. Make my service faithful and my hope in the risen Jesus visible to others. Amen.
