DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 294 OF 365
An Open Door and a Clear Word
Read Colossians 4Writing as a prisoner, Paul asks the Colossians to pray for an open door for the message of Christ. His request in verses 2–4 is striking: the opportunity he names is an opportunity to speak, and the help he seeks is clarity in speaking. His chains have not displaced his concern for the gospel. He invites the congregation into that concern through steady, watchful, thankful prayer. The next commands connect their prayers with their own public conduct. They must use opportunities wisely and speak graciously, with attention to the person they are answering. Mission therefore involves more than gaining an audience. It also involves communicating faithfully and treating people wisely. Today, we can ask God to create opportunities while preparing to answer actual people with care. Prayerful dependence and thoughtful speech belong together; neither makes the other unnecessary.
Put the Word into practice
Pray today for one person who communicates the gospel, asking specifically for opportunity and clarity. Then prepare a brief, gracious explanation of your faith for someone you already know.

How do Paul’s requests for an open door and clear speech reshape what you pray for yourself and those sharing Christ?
A prayerful response
Father, open doors for the message of Christ and help your servants speak clearly. Keep me attentive in prayer and wise in conversation. Replace careless or impatient words with speech that honors Jesus and takes the listener seriously. Amen.
