DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 289 OF 365
A Different Kind of Confidence
Read Philippians 3Paul answers misplaced religious confidence by laying out the credentials he once valued. His ancestry, religious identity, and zeal could have supported an impressive claim to standing before God. Yet he tells the Philippians that knowing Christ has changed how he evaluates the entire account. What once seemed profitable cannot provide the righteousness he now seeks in Christ through faith. Paul is not replacing strenuous religion with spiritual indifference. Immediately afterward, he describes a life directed toward knowing Christ, sharing his sufferings, and pressing toward the goal. The contrast is between relying on personal qualifications and belonging to Christ, not between effort and inactivity. His pursuit grows from Christ’s prior claim upon him. For believers today, obedience matters deeply, but it must not become a competing foundation for confidence before God. Christ is the treasure; religious achievement cannot take his place.
Put the Word into practice
Write down one religious accomplishment or background advantage you rely on to feel acceptable to God. Beside it, name the chapter’s alternative: righteousness from God through faith in Christ. Let that distinction shape your next act of obedience.

According to verses 7–12, how does receiving righteousness through faith change the reason Paul continues to pursue Christ?
A prayerful response
Father, forgive me for treating spiritual achievements as grounds for boasting. Anchor my confidence in Christ rather than my record. Give me a deeper desire to know him and a willing heart to follow him, including when faithfulness is costly. Amen.
