A Community Filled with the Spirit

Read Ephesians 5

Ephesians 5:18–21 connects being filled with the Spirit to the shared life of the church. Paul contrasts drunkenness, which leads to reckless living, with the Spirit’s influence, which expresses itself through worship, gratitude, and mutual submission. These believers are not directed toward a private spiritual experience detached from their relationships. Their songs address one another as well as the Lord, so worship becomes a way of strengthening the community. Thanksgiving directs their attention toward the Father through Jesus, while reverence for Christ reshapes how they treat each other. The command invites us to welcome the Spirit’s active presence today, and the surrounding verses help us recognize the character of that fullness. Spiritual vitality is not measured only by intensity of feeling. In this passage, it becomes audible in grateful worship and visible in people willing to yield to one another before Christ.

Put the Word into practice

At your next gathering with believers, deliberately participate in the singing as an act of encouraging those around you, not only expressing your own feelings to God.

Which expressions in verses 19–21 show that being filled with the Spirit affects the whole community rather than only the individual?

A prayerful response

Holy Spirit, fill our shared life with worship that honors Jesus. Replace careless living with grateful attention to the Father. Make our songs sincere and our relationships humble, so that reverence for Christ shapes how we listen and serve. Amen.
