DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 284 OF 365

From Taking to Giving

Read Ephesians 4

In Ephesians 4:28, Paul describes repentance with a striking change of direction: the person who once stole is to work honestly so that someone in need can receive help. He addresses believers learning to leave their former way of life and live according to the new humanity God has created. Stopping theft matters, but Paul does not stop there. Honest labor replaces dishonest taking, and generosity gives that labor an outward purpose. The goal is more than becoming self-supporting or protecting a good reputation. A person who once treated others as sources of gain can become someone who supplies their needs. This command makes the chapter’s teaching about renewed thinking concrete. Grace reshapes both how resources are acquired and why they are held. Our relationship with possessions becomes part of the loving responsibility we carry toward one another.

Put the Word into practice

Set aside a specific amount from your next honest earnings to meet an identifiable need, treating generosity as part of the purpose of your work.

Why does Paul direct the former thief toward generosity rather than simply telling that person to stop stealing?

A prayerful response

God, expose dishonesty and selfishness in the way I handle resources. Teach me to work with integrity and to notice people who lack what they need. Turn my desire to accumulate into a willingness to share. Amen.
