DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 281 OF 365
Eyes Open to Christ’s Reign
Read Ephesians 1After hearing of his readers’ faith and love, Paul does not assume they have nothing more to receive. He thanks God and asks that their inward understanding be opened. His prayer moves toward a particular need: knowing the greatness of God’s power toward believers. Paul gives that power a concrete reference point in the resurrection and exaltation of Jesus. The Christ who was raised now reigns above every authority, and God has given him as head over all things for the church. This is not an invitation for believers to imagine themselves in control of everything. It is an invitation to know the reigning Christ more deeply and recognize the power of the God to whom they belong. We can pray this way today, asking for Spirit-given understanding that strengthens our hope and confidence in Jesus rather than fascination with our own importance.
Put the Word into practice
Use Ephesians 1:17–23 to guide a prayer for one believer by name, asking God to deepen their knowledge of him and their confidence in the risen Christ.

Why does Paul point to Jesus’ resurrection and exaltation when explaining the power he wants believers to understand?
A prayerful response
Father of glory, open the eyes of our hearts. Help us understand the hope of your calling and the greatness of your power toward those who believe. Keep our attention on the risen Jesus, and strengthen your church under his loving authority. Amen.
