DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 279 OF 365
Freedom That Serves
Read Galatians 5Christian freedom takes a surprising shape in this chapter: people released from bondage willingly serve one another through love. Paul warns the Galatians against seeking justification through the law, but he also refuses to let freedom become permission for selfishness. The alternative to religious bondage is not unrestricted appetite; it is life directed by the Spirit. Notice how relational the contrast becomes. Hatred, jealousy, anger, rivalry, and division destroy a community, while the Spirit produces patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control. Walking by the Spirit therefore concerns more than private feelings or spiritual vocabulary. His work becomes visible in how believers treat people who frustrate them. For us, the question is not simply whether we insist on our freedom, but whether that freedom is becoming loving service. Life in the Spirit changes the way we respond to one another.
Put the Word into practice
In one strained relationship today, replace a defensive or cutting response with a specific act of service, such as completing a needed task for that person.

How does Paul’s contrast between mutual destruction and loving service in Galatians 5:13–15 expose the way you are using your freedom?
A prayerful response
Holy Spirit, direct my freedom toward love. Expose the jealousy, anger, and pride that damage my relationships. Grow your patience and gentleness in me, and help me serve rather than demand my own way. Amen.
