Correction That Seeks Restoration

Read 2 Corinthians 13

As Paul prepares to visit Corinth, he explains what his authority is for: building believers up rather than tearing them down. That purpose does not make him indifferent to evil. He warns that persistent sin will require a serious response, yet his preference is that the Corinthians examine themselves and do what is honorable before he arrives. Remarkably, he would rather they become strong than secure an impressive demonstration of his own authority. Their restoration matters more than his reputation. This gives his searching instructions a pastoral aim: self-examination should lead toward truthful living, maturity, and peace, not become an exercise in endless suspicion. For this troubled congregation, correction and comfort belong together. Today, both receiving correction and offering it should be governed by the same concern: that people become faithful to Christ rather than that someone wins a contest.

Put the Word into practice

Revisit one correction you have received and identify a specific change that would serve truth and peace; make that change rather than concentrating on defending your reputation.

In verses 7–10, what shows that Paul values the Corinthians’ restoration more than appearing successful himself?

A prayerful response

God of love and peace, make me willing to examine my conduct honestly. Free me from defending myself at the expense of truth. Let the correction I receive, and any correction I offer, serve restoration and faithfulness to Jesus.
