DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 273 OF 365

Grace That Meets Unremoved Weakness

Read 2 Corinthians 12

Paul tells the Corinthians about a prayer that did not receive the answer he requested. After extraordinary revelations, he experienced a tormenting thorn and pleaded three times for its removal. The chapter does not identify the thorn precisely, so we should not build the lesson around a confident diagnosis. Its clear emphasis is Christ’s sufficient grace and power amid Paul’s weakness. Paul’s change is not from prayer to resignation, but from seeking relief to also welcoming Christ’s sustaining presence. His limitations no longer disqualify him from fruitful service or require him to maintain an impressive appearance. This same chapter reports signs, wonders, and mighty works, so dependence in suffering is not presented as opposition to miracles. For the Corinthians, the contrast challenges admiration built on impressive experiences: Christ’s power matters more than a servant’s appearance of strength.

Put the Word into practice

Bring one persistent difficulty to the Lord in honest prayer, asking both for relief and for grace to fulfill a specific responsibility while that difficulty remains.

How does Paul’s response to the thorn in verses 8–10 challenge the way you judge whether Christ is working through you?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, I bring you the weakness I would rather have removed. Meet me with your sufficient grace, and teach me to depend on your power instead of protecting an impressive image. Sustain my love and service today.
