DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 272 OF 365

Do Not Mistake Domination for Devotion

Read 2 Corinthians 11

Paul is distressed that the Corinthians tolerate teachers who exploit and dominate them. In verse 20, he names bondage, consuming their resources, taking them captive, self-exaltation, and even physical humiliation. Their willingness to endure such treatment is not spiritual maturity. It reveals how badly their discernment has been distorted. Earlier, Paul explains his concern through the image of their promised marriage to Christ: deceptive ministry threatens their undivided devotion to him. Impressive religious appearances cannot settle whether a worker is faithful, because deception can dress itself as righteousness. Paul’s own concern for the churches offers a sharp contrast to leaders who elevate themselves at others’ expense. Today, loyalty to Christ does not require accepting exploitation from someone claiming spiritual authority. Discernment attends both to the Jesus being proclaimed and to the conduct of those proclaiming him.

Put the Word into practice

Evaluate one ministry relationship using the behaviors Paul names in verse 20; if you recognize exploitation or humiliation, seek help from a trustworthy Christian outside that leader’s control.

Which behaviors in verse 20 might you be tempted to excuse because a teacher appears spiritually impressive?

A prayerful response

Father, keep my devotion to Christ clear and undivided. Give me discernment beyond impressive appearances, courage to reject exploitation, and wisdom to recognize those who genuinely care for your people.
