DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 259 OF 365
Make Room for Others to Understand
Read 1 Corinthians 14A trumpet that gives an unclear sound cannot prepare anyone to respond. Paul uses that image to help the Corinthians recognize why understanding matters in gathered worship. Their enthusiasm for spiritual gifts needs a shared purpose: strengthening the assembly. Speaking in tongues is not rejected; Paul values it and explicitly forbids banning it. Yet a public message in tongues requires interpretation so others can benefit. Prophecy likewise serves people through strengthening, encouragement, and consolation, and its messages are to be weighed. These instructions join spiritual openness with responsibility. The speaker's experience is not the only concern; the listener's ability to understand and respond matters too. Today, welcoming the Spirit's gifts includes welcoming interpretation, discernment, and orderly participation. Making room for others to learn is not resistance to the Spirit but obedience to the purpose Paul gives for gathered ministry.
Put the Word into practice
Before your next contribution in gathered worship, consider how listeners will understand and be strengthened; if you offer a public message in tongues, follow Paul's instruction concerning interpretation.

How does Paul's trumpet illustration challenge the assumption that a powerful spiritual experience automatically strengthens everyone present?
A prayerful response
Holy Spirit, stir our desire for your gifts and turn our attention toward those receiving ministry. Help us speak clearly, discern faithfully, and welcome the order that allows others to learn and be encouraged. Amen.
