DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 258 OF 365

Love Gives the Gift Its Purpose

Read 1 Corinthians 13

Spiritual power and sacrificial action can look impressive while missing what matters most. Paul presses this contrast upon the Corinthians through tongues, prophecy, knowledge, extraordinary faith, and costly giving. He does not dismiss these activities; he exposes their emptiness when love is absent. Then he makes love recognizable: patience instead of irritation, kindness instead of pride, truth instead of delight in wrongdoing. Love is not merely the feeling behind ministry. It shapes how people are treated while ministry happens. Someone may speak powerfully yet respond harshly when interrupted or overlooked. Paul will not let visible ability excuse that contradiction. For believers today, this chapter welcomes a searching assessment of both spiritual expression and ordinary relationships. The question is not simply whether we have something to offer, but whether our offering serves others with patient, truthful, enduring love.

Put the Word into practice

In your next conversation with someone who frustrates you, practice the patience Paul describes by letting them finish and answering kindly rather than defending your importance.

A prayerful response

Father, expose the pride that can hide beneath useful service. Form patient, truthful love in me, so that what I offer others is not emptied by the way I treat them. Amen.
