DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 257 OF 365
Different Gifts, Shared Care
Read 1 Corinthians 12The Spirit’s gifts are not distributed to make every believer identical. Paul tells the Corinthians that the same Spirit gives different manifestations for the benefit of everyone, including wisdom, healing, miracles, prophecy, tongues, and interpretation. Their variety expresses the Spirit’s choice, not a competition for spiritual importance. Paul’s body imagery makes the purpose unmistakable: an ear does not lose its belonging because it is not an eye, and an eye cannot dismiss its need for a hand. Both insecurity and superiority misunderstand how God has arranged his people. We can welcome the Spirit’s present gifts while refusing to turn any particular gift into a measure of everyone’s worth. The chapter’s goal is shared care, with suffering and honor carried together. A gift serves its purpose when it benefits the body, not when it makes its recipient appear indispensable.
Put the Word into practice
Ask a believer whose contribution differs from yours what support they need, then provide one practical form of help that strengthens their service to the congregation.
Search the Scripture
Which error in Paul’s body illustration most challenges you: doubting your own belonging or dismissing your need for another member?
A prayerful response
Holy Spirit, work among us through the gifts you choose to give. Free me from comparison and self-importance. Help me receive what others contribute and offer what you entrust to me for the good of Christ’s body.
