DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 254 OF 365

A Right Willingly Set Aside

Read 1 Corinthians 9

Paul carefully establishes his right to material support before explaining why he has not used it. Soldiers, vineyard workers, shepherds, and those serving at the altar all illustrate that laborers may rightly receive provision through their work. The Corinthians had received spiritual ministry from Paul, so supporting him would have been appropriate. His refusal of support does not make that support wrong; he explicitly affirms the Lord’s provision for those who proclaim the Good News. Yet Paul chooses to bear the cost himself so that nothing in his conduct will hinder the message of Christ. His freedom becomes a means of service rather than a demand for personal advantage. This distinction matters for us: a legitimate right need not always be exercised. Love for the gospel can make us willing to surrender something genuinely owed without denying that it was rightfully ours.

Put the Word into practice

In one conversation about Jesus this week, give up your preference for timing, convenience, or recognition so you can listen attentively and serve the other person.

Why does Paul defend his right to support so thoroughly before describing his decision not to use it?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, make the advance of your Good News more precious to me than personal advantage. Help me honor those who serve you and recognize when surrendering my own preference would remove an obstacle to someone hearing about you.
