When Knowledge Needs Love

Read 1 Corinthians 8

A correct answer can still become a harmful example. In Corinth, some believers understood that idols were nothing and that food did not improve their standing before God. Others still associated sacrificial food with the idols they had worshiped. Paul asks the knowledgeable believer to consider what happens when someone with that vulnerable conscience sees them eating in an idol’s temple. The danger is not merely disagreement or hurt feelings; someone may be encouraged to act against conscience and return toward what they understand as idol worship. Paul measures this harm by Christ’s love: this brother is someone for whom Christ died. Wounding that person is therefore an offense against Christ himself. Christian maturity does not simply ask whether an action is permissible. It asks whether exercising that freedom will strengthen another believer’s faith or help pull it apart.

How does Paul’s reminder that Christ died for the vulnerable believer change the way you evaluate your freedom?

A prayerful response

Father, keep my understanding from becoming pride. Teach me to value the people Christ died for more than the freedoms I enjoy. Give me the love to refrain when my example could lead someone toward sin.
