DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 249 OF 365

Faithful Before the True Judge

Read 1 Corinthians 4

Paul asks the Corinthians to regard him and his fellow workers as servants entrusted with what belongs to God. The essential requirement is faithfulness, not an impressive public reputation. This changes how Paul receives their evaluations. Their verdict is not final, but neither is his own favorable assessment of himself. A clear conscience does not give him complete knowledge of his heart; the Lord remains his judge. Paul therefore warns against reaching final judgments before the Lord reveals hidden things and inward purposes. His point is not that conduct never needs correction, since this chapter itself corrects arrogance. Rather, the Corinthians must stop acting as though they can deliver God's final verdict on his servants. We can take responsibility for faithful service without making human approval our master or treating our own self-confidence as proof that everything is right.

Put the Word into practice

Before seeking feedback on one responsibility today, write down what faithfulness to that responsibility requires and pray for honesty about any motive you would rather conceal.

Why does Paul distinguish having a clear conscience from being finally vindicated by the Lord?

A prayerful response

Lord, free me from serving for applause and from defending myself too quickly. Help me receive correction humbly, examine my motives honestly, and remain faithful to what you have entrusted to me.
