DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 247 OF 365

Faith Has a Stronger Foundation Than Eloquence

Read 1 Corinthians 2

Paul reminds the Corinthians that his arrival was marked by weakness, fear, and trembling, not an impressive display of personal confidence. Yet his weakness did not prevent the Spirit from working powerfully. He deliberately centered his message on Jesus Christ crucified so that their faith would rest on God’s power rather than a speaker’s persuasive skill. The contrast is not between thoughtful teaching and careless speech; later in the chapter Paul explicitly speaks of God’s wisdom. The issue is what carries the message and sustains faith. Human brilliance cannot replace the Spirit’s work. For us, this both humbles the confident and encourages the hesitant. We can welcome the Spirit’s present power without making a polished performance its measure. Faithful witness keeps the crucified Jesus central and depends on God to accomplish what eloquence alone cannot.

Put the Word into practice

Before your next opportunity to explain your faith, prepare a clear account centered on Jesus Christ crucified, then pray specifically for the Holy Spirit’s power rather than trying to manufacture an impressive presentation.

Search the Scripture

What purpose does Paul give in 1 Corinthians 2:5 for the Spirit’s demonstration of power, and how does it challenge the way you evaluate Christian ministry?

A prayerful response

Holy Spirit, help me speak faithfully about Jesus even when I feel inadequate. Free me from trusting in performance or hiding behind fear. Work through my words so that those who hear will rest their faith in God’s power, not in me. Amen.
