DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 245 OF 365
Receive the One Who Has Helped Many
Read Romans 16Before the long series of greetings, Paul asks the Roman church to receive Phoebe and give her practical assistance. He identifies her as their sister and a servant of the assembly at Cenchreae, then points to her record of helping many people, including himself. His commendation moves from recognition to responsibility: the congregation should not merely admire her service but support her in what she needs. Phoebe’s exact responsibilities are not detailed here, so we should not invent them. What is clear is that her work matters and that the church’s welcome should have substance. Paul does not treat receiving help as a loss of dignity for someone who has helped others. For churches today, this is a pattern of mutual care: recognize faithful service, receive fellow believers as family, and make assistance available rather than leaving workers to carry every burden alone.
Put the Word into practice
Contact someone who regularly serves your congregation, ask what practical help they currently need, and arrange one specific way to provide it.

What does Paul ask the Roman believers to do for Phoebe in Romans 16:1–2, beyond simply recognizing her past service?
A prayerful response
Father, open my eyes to those whose faithful service supports many others. Make our welcome more than kind words. Give us generosity and attentiveness so that those who help others also receive the help they need. Amen.
