DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 244 OF 365
Power That Serves the Good News
Read Romans 15When Paul describes his ministry to the Gentiles, he carefully identifies who deserves the credit. He will speak only of what Christ accomplished through him. His words, deeds, and the signs and wonders worked by the Spirit belong to one purpose: bringing people into obedience to God through the Good News. The miraculous is neither an embarrassment to conceal nor a platform for personal greatness. It serves the proclamation of Christ. Paul tells the Roman believers about this work while explaining his desire to reach people who have not heard of Jesus. His ambition is missionary, not self-promoting. Today we can welcome the Spirit’s powerful activity, including miracles, while keeping the same center. The measure of ministry is not how impressive the messenger appears, but whether Christ is proclaimed and people are being led to obey him.
Put the Word into practice
Choose one person who has not heard the Good News clearly. Pray for an opportunity to explain Jesus to them, asking the Holy Spirit to empower your words and deeds and to work in whatever ways serve Christ’s purpose.
Search the Scripture
According to Romans 15:18–21, whose work does Paul describe, and what purpose unites his preaching, deeds, and the Spirit’s signs and wonders?
A prayerful response
Jesus, make me willing to speak of you where you are not known. Holy Spirit, empower my witness and work in power for your purposes. Keep me from seeking attention, and let everything point toward faith and obedience to Christ. Amen.
