DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 238 OF 365

When Achievement Becomes a Stumbling Stone

Read Romans 9

Romans 9 ends with a startling reversal: Gentiles who had not pursued righteousness received it by faith, while Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, failed to arrive. Paul is not mocking Israel; his opening sorrow shows how deeply he loves his people. His concern is the difference between trusting God and treating obedience as the basis of acceptance. Religious effort cannot replace faith. The very stone God places in Zion becomes an obstacle to those who refuse to believe, yet the believer will not be disappointed. Christians differ over how the chapter’s teaching on election relates to human responsibility, but this closing contrast is explicit: righteousness is received by faith, not secured through works. For readers then and now, the question is not how impressive our religious record appears, but whether we are trusting Christ.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one religious activity you have been treating as proof that God should accept you. Continue any genuinely good practice, but deliberately surrender its use as a claim on God and place your confidence in Christ instead.

Search the Scripture

In Romans 9:30–33, how does Israel’s pursuit of righteousness become a stumbling point, and where might that same misplaced confidence appear in you?

A prayerful response

Father, expose the pride that turns obedience into a claim on your favor. Teach me to trust Christ rather than my record, and give me tender concern for others instead of spiritual superiority. Amen.
