DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 233 OF 365
Faith Before the Sign
Read Romans 4The order matters in Romans 4: Abraham was counted righteous before he received circumcision. Paul asks his readers to notice this sequence because it overturns the idea that an outward religious marker secured Abraham’s acceptance with God. Circumcision confirmed the righteousness he already had through faith; it did not purchase it. This also explains how Abraham can be the father of believing people who do not share that physical sign. God’s family is not held together by grounds for boasting, but by trust in the God who justifies the ungodly. Paul brings that argument directly to his readers: Abraham’s story was recorded for their sake too. Their faith rests in God, who raised Jesus after he was delivered up for their trespasses. Our confidence before God belongs there, not in our religious credentials.
Put the Word into practice
Write down one religious achievement you are tempted to treat as proof that God must accept you. Beside it, identify Jesus’ death and resurrection in Romans 4:24–25 as the basis of your confidence instead.

How does Abraham’s acceptance before circumcision challenge the credentials you rely on when approaching God?
A prayerful response
Father, expose the ways I turn religious obedience into a claim on your favor. Thank you for receiving the ungodly through faith. Settle my confidence in Jesus, who died for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.
