DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 230 OF 365
When Gratitude Gives Way to Exchange
Read Romans 1In Romans 1:21–25, Paul describes a downward movement that begins with refusing to honor God and give him thanks. Humanity does not merely lack information; people turn away from the Creator whose power is evident in what he has made. Worship then shifts toward created things, and truth is exchanged for a lie. This exchange reaches beyond religious images into the direction of human service: what people worship becomes what they serve. Paul writes to believers in Rome, helping them understand the seriousness of humanity’s need for the gospel. His description also calls us to examine our own loyalties. Gratitude is not a decorative addition to faith; it acknowledges that God is God and we are not. When something created receives the devotion that belongs to its Creator, our thinking and desires are being ordered around a false center.
Put the Word into practice
Choose one created thing that has been commanding your devotion, and spend five minutes thanking God for it as his gift while explicitly surrendering its place as your highest priority.
Search the Scripture
Where have I begun serving something God created rather than honoring him as its Creator?
A prayerful response
Creator God, forgive me for receiving your gifts while neglecting you. Expose the false centers of my devotion. Restore honest gratitude in me, and teach me to honor and serve you above everything you have made. Amen.
