When Zeal Learns to Listen

Read Acts 22

Paul begins his defense in Acts 22 by acknowledging something he shares with his hostile listeners: zeal for God. Yet his own history exposes how badly zeal can be misdirected. He had imprisoned believers and supported deadly persecution while believing he was serving God. The decisive change comes when Jesus confronts him, and Paul moves from enforcing his own convictions to asking for the Lord’s direction. The man who traveled with authority must enter Damascus led by someone else’s hand. This dependence is not the end of his usefulness; it becomes the setting in which he receives sight and learns his calling through Ananias. For the Jerusalem crowd, Paul’s testimony challenges the assumption that religious intensity proves faithfulness. For us, it asks whether our strongest convictions remain open to correction by Jesus. True surrender does not merely intensify our activity; it changes whom we obey.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one religious conviction that shapes how you treat other people, and examine it alongside Jesus’ correction of Paul in Acts 22:6–16. Name any attitude or action you need to change.

How does Paul’s movement from persecuting believers to receiving help from Ananias challenge the way you measure spiritual faithfulness?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, expose any zeal in me that harms people while claiming to honor you. Make me teachable, willing to receive correction, and ready to obey rather than defend myself. Let my devotion serve your purposes.
