DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 221 OF 365

Shepherds, Not Collectors of Followers

Read Acts 20

At Miletus, Paul tells the Ephesian elders to watch both themselves and the flock entrusted to them. These responsibilities cannot be separated: leaders who neglect their own conduct are poorly positioned to protect others. Paul's warning becomes especially searching when he says danger will arise not only from outsiders but also from among the elders themselves. Distorted teaching will serve a personal ambition: drawing disciples after the speaker. Against that pattern, Paul presents years of tearful instruction, freedom from greed, and labor that helps the weak. The church belongs to the Lord who purchased it, not to the personalities who serve it. Paul therefore entrusts these believers to God and the word of his grace rather than making their future depend on his continued presence. Faithful shepherding builds people up under God's care instead of gathering them into dependence on a leader.

Put the Word into practice

Examine one responsibility you hold in your church or household. Change one practice that makes people dependent on your approval so that it instead helps them understand and obey God's word.

Search the Scripture

In Paul's farewell, what distinguishes care for the Lord's flock from the ambition to draw disciples after oneself?

A prayerful response

Lord, guard my motives as I care for others. Deliver me from the desire to collect admiration or control. Help our church's leaders watch their lives, teach faithfully, and protect those entrusted to their care.
