DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 220 OF 365

Led Beyond What They Knew

Read Acts 19

Paul's first conversation with the disciples in Ephesus uncovers a significant gap in their understanding. They know John's baptism but have not heard about the Holy Spirit. Paul does not merely urge them toward a stronger religious experience; he explains that John's call to repentance directed people toward faith in Jesus. They respond by receiving baptism in Jesus' name. When Paul lays hands on them, the Holy Spirit comes upon them, and they speak in other languages and prophesy. The movement is centered on Jesus and marked by the Spirit's active presence. Christians differ over how this sequence relates to every believer's experience, but the chapter plainly presents these gifts as God's work, not something to dismiss. We can welcome the Spirit's present activity while keeping our attention where Paul's instruction places it: repentance, faith in Jesus, and a receptive response to God.

Put the Word into practice

Read Acts 19:1–7 slowly, then pray with a trusted church leader for a fuller understanding of Jesus and openness to the Holy Spirit's gifts, including tongues and prophecy.

Why does Paul explain John's message about Jesus before laying hands on these disciples, and how should that order shape your priorities?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, deepen my faith in you and correct what I do not yet understand. Holy Spirit, I welcome your work and gifts. Make me receptive to your presence and faithful in my response.
