DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 213 OF 365
Prayer Behind a Closed Door
Read Acts 12Peter stands outside the prayer meeting while the believers inside struggle to believe he has been released. Acts 12 holds their earnest prayer and their startled disbelief together without hiding either. This Jerusalem assembly faces real violence: Herod has killed James and imprisoned Peter. Their gathering is not a technique for controlling events but a shared appeal to God under pressure. When an angel leads Peter past soldiers and through an iron gate, the deliverance exceeds even the praying community’s expectations. Rhoda recognizes his voice, yet the others dismiss her report until they see him themselves. Their imperfect expectation does not prevent God from acting. At the same time, James’s death keeps us from turning Peter’s rescue into a promise that every faithful believer will escape persecution. We can pray persistently, welcome God’s miraculous intervention, and entrust those we love to him rather than to the strength of our own confidence.
Put the Word into practice
Invite another believer to pray with you today for one Christian facing persecution or confinement, asking specifically for protection, endurance, and freedom.

How does the contrast between the assembly’s constant prayer and its reaction to Rhoda expose both the value of prayer and the weakness of human expectation?
A prayerful response
Lord, bring the suffering members of your church before our hearts. Keep us praying when fear narrows our expectations. Intervene in your power, sustain those who remain under pressure, and help us recognize your work with gratitude.
